Mechanism of Distillation Columns

Containing components of different volatilities, the feed mixture reaches approximately at the middle of the column. Via a plate or feed tray, the liquid flows downward through column to the packing and comes in contact with the rising vapor system. Now the liquid enters a reboiler. The reboiler differentiates the feed into a stream of vapor which returns the column and a liquid product stream. The vapor streams go through the column vertically, picking up the more volatile components, it exits the columns. The vapor enters a condenser and after condensation, the change stream enters a reflux drum, splits into a product stream which is known as distillate.
