Nurses today are more widespread and work in a variety of diverse settings. Nurses are needed in GP surgeries, clinics, nursing and residential care homes, and occupational health services, the military, voluntary organisations that run hospices or residential care and industry.

Nursing careers are diverse, challenging and rewarding. Having to take responsibility for the care they provide and answering for their own judgements and actions. Nurses constantly respond to new challenges and act as a leader, carer, counsellor and clinician.

Experienced nurses find fulfilling careers in positions of responsibility. Often running nurse led clinics or in leadership roles, up to executive level. Nursing is changing rapidly, with more focus on public health and preventing disease. It is possible to develop career pathways in clinical, research, education and management roles.

Different roles

Perhaps the most public type of nursing is at the doctor s surgery. Most practices will have a nurse working there to treat minor injuries, for health screening, family planning, managing and administering vaccination programmes, manage and deliver specialist clinics, and assist with minor operations under local anaesthetic. A varied role that will ensure no day is the same.

It s the same in accident & emergency, a high pressured demanding job where no two days will be the same. Depending on the extent of your injuries, the first person you see will probably be an A&E nurse, responsible for assessing your condition and possibly treat patients in need of urgent care.

The A&E department is a very hectic and challenging place to work but it is also very rewarding. This is the front line of health care, dealing with emergencies and saving lives. It s what many people get into nursing for, but only a special few can take it for a whole career.

Specialist areas

All areas of nursing can be considered specialist. From theatres to paediatrics, almost every department requires nurses for a range of specialist skills this would include planning and implementing care to record maintenance, clinical skills and working with a multi disciplinary team to support patients.

There are also nurses who specialise in doing work in the community. Community nurses can cater to patients of all ages, normally the users of community nurses are the elderly or disabled for admission prevention purposes. As with any nursing role it is varied and complex playing a multitude of roles from providing advice and care to monitoring records and quality of care.

As you can see, the opportunities are endless when you become a qualified as a nurse. It s a really good idea to try several different areas before you think about specialising. That way, you ll get a better idea about which kind of nursing suits you best.

Popular areas of nursing

One area that appeals to lots of nurses is Midwifery. Seeing new life come into the world and being a part of that is a truly amazing job and unsurprisingly one that is very popular. There is separate training for this type of nursing as it involves a range of different skills.

It s a similar story for military nursing, which again is very popular and involves many different skill sets. But the opportunities open to military nurses are incredible.

Whatever type of nurse you decide to be, you can look forward to a long, varied and interesting career where you ll know that what you do each day makes a difference to people s lives. How many jobs can actually say that?
