Much has been written about the many and varied charms of a holiday to South Africa. There is something for everyone; be it a bungee jump for the backpackers, a history tour for the boffin, a beautiful beach for a bikini-babe and much, much more besides. But apart from everything you’ve read, South Africa can conjure up a few lesser-known facts that you might not have known before. But read on, and once you do, you may find that holiday even more tempting!

Nuts About You

Anyone who has experienced the subtle delights of a macadamia nut may be surprised to know that South Africa is one of the world’s largest producers of these delicious, delicately flavoured nuts. Although indigenous to Australia, South African farmers recognised it as a viable crop and it now they commercially produce huge amounts for export annually. Not only a tasty treat, macadamias are renowned for their nourishing properties and are also used in high end skin care products.

A Prize-winning Street

Soweto, in South Africa has the only street in the world that can boast two Nobel Peace prize winners as residents. Both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu had houses on Vilakazi street. Mandela’s has now been reborn as a museum, but much of it has been preserved just as it was in the 1960s when he lived there. Although he no longer resides there himself, Archbishop Tutu’s house is still in his family and used by his relatives.

All Aboard for Luxury

South Africa has over 19,000 miles of railway track so it is fitting that it is home to the world’s most luxurious train safaris on the Rovos Rail. With journeys ranging from a mere 24 hours up to a fortnight, this is train travel unlike any you have ever experienced before. With features like wood panelled Edwardian coaches, five-star fine dining and out-of-this-world luxurious suites, the train glides around Africa from Cape Town to exotic destinations such as Tanzania, Victoria Falls and along the magnificent Garden Route, covering thousands of miles of the continent’s most spectacular landscape.

Life in the Fast Lane

Everybody knows South Africa is renowned for its fantastic wildlife and people travel from all over the world to go on safari holidays to get up close to the country’s animal population. But did you know that South Africa is home to three out of the five fastest land animals on Earth? The cheetah, the wildebeest and the lion have all earned their place in this prestigious category, and you can meet them all in South Africa!

Falling Water

In terms of sightseeing, there are not many more awe-inspiring sights than the tumbling drop of a massive waterfall, spilling out from a soaring cliff. South Africa has many stunning waterfalls but perhaps the most dramatic of all is the Tugela Falls – which holds the title of second highest in the entire world. Beaten only by Angel Falls in Venezuela, at 2,789 feet Tugela Falls makes for a breath-taking sight. Located in the picturesque Drakensberg in Kwa-Zulu Natal, the trek to reach Tugela Falls is as spectacular as the waterfall itself.
